Did you know? More than 22% of college students experience food insecurity.

But, among college students who are eligible for SNAP food assistance, 2 out of 3 students are not enrolled.

That’s why the Carolina Hunger Initiative is soon launching NC College Food Benefits, a new SNAP Outreach campaign focused specifically on North Carolina college students.

Working in partnership with the NC Department of Health and Human Services, this campaign will make it easier for college students to learn about their SNAP eligibility. It will also provide resources to help college staff and other partners to connect their students with food benefits. Let’s work together to prevent food insecurity from being a barrier to academic success!

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.

The campaign will have a new website, NCcollegefoodbenefits.org, which is coming soon.

In the meantime, you can find general info on SNAP in North Carolina (also known in NC as Food and Nutrition Services or FNS) at the NC Department of Health and Human Services website, or check with your college for local on-campus resources.
